Avebury Stone Circle 01
Within the countryside of Wiltshire, the small village of Avebury is host to some 5000 year old stone circle monuments similar to those found at Stonehenge.
Situated 8 miles south of Swindon, Avebury is surrounded by one of Europe’s largest prehistoric stone circles. This coupled with old English countryside makes it a great place to visit! Unlike Stonehenge, the Avebury Stones are open to the public all day and all year round with no admission fees. Great for a morning walk or to watch the sun go down on a summer evening!
Parking is ample, with a car park within 200 metres of the stones. There are also eating facilities and the Red Lion pub for a drink and some lunch.
Silbury Hill Mound Avebury
Less than a mile down the road you can also find Silbury Hill, the worlds largest prehistoric man-made mound. It is estimated to have been built in around 2,400 BC.
The strange thing is, no-one really knows its purpose or meaning!
